Morning arrived.
The Universe stretched.
“Well...”
“He didn’t sleep much.”
“He’ll deny that too.”
Sunlight spilled through the window as the asshole reached for his phone before his feet even touched the floor.
Habit.
Coffee.
Calendar.
Email.
Nothing unusual.
Until...
There it was.
Another notification.
Another article.
Another post from the angel.
The Universe smiled.
“Oh no...”
“She’s still writing.”
“He thought yesterday was the end.”
“Sweetheart...”
“You’ve clearly never met an author.”
He sighed.
“...Of course she wrote another one.”
He opened it.
The Universe leaned over his shoulder.
Not to invade his privacy.
Just because...
Well...
It was entertaining.
As he read, something strange happened.
It wasn’t that he learned she loved deeply.
He’d always suspected that.
It wasn’t that she was stubborn.
He knew that too.
It wasn’t even her ridiculous sense of humor.
Good Lord...
The woman could go from discussing the meaning of existence to calling someone a pain in the ass in the very same paragraph.
He’d never understood how that worked.
Apparently...
Neither did the Universe.
No...
What surprised him...
Was discovering how much of herself she had quietly carried alone.
The fears she rarely spoke aloud.
The nights she questioned whether anyone would ever choose her without asking her to become smaller.
The way she loved people...
Yet still chose herself when love wasn’t returned with honesty.
The Universe became unexpectedly quiet.
“There...”
“That’s the part.”
“You finally saw it.”
He had always noticed her strength.
He had admired it.
Sometimes it intimidated him.
Sometimes it irritated him.
Mostly...
It fascinated him.
But strength had made him overlook something.
How vulnerable it is to keep loving after being disappointed.
He read another paragraph.
Then another.
A smile escaped before he could stop it.
“She’s impossible.”
The Universe laughed.
“You’ve said that three times.”
“And yet...”
“You keep reading.”
He leaned back.
Something else had begun bothering him.
Not because it was wrong.
Because it was true.
He had a type.
Or at least...
He thought he did.
Elegant.
Reserved.
Perfectly composed.
Women who knew exactly which fork to use at dinner.
Women who rarely said the unexpected.
Women who fit neatly inside the picture everyone expected him to choose.
Then...
There was her.
She laughed with her whole body.
She made jokes in the middle of serious conversations.
She’d say something so profound it could stop a room...
Only to follow it with,
“Anyway...”
“...that motherfucker.”
The Universe covered its face.
“I know.”
“I don’t understand it either.”
She wasn’t polished.
She was real.
She wasn’t trying to impress anyone.
Half the time she forgot she was impressive.
She wasn’t interested in performing sophistication.
She was interested in telling the truth.
Sometimes beautifully.
Sometimes awkwardly.
Usually while laughing.
He stared out the window.
“When did that become...”
“...my favorite thing about her?”
The Universe answered for him.
“It was never the words.”
“It was the freedom.”
“You’ve spent so much of your life around people who carefully measured every sentence.”
“Then along came a woman who spoke like she’d accidentally invited the entire Universe into the conversation.”
“Messy.”
“Brilliant.”
“Completely herself.”
“And somehow...”
“You felt more at peace with her chaos than with everyone else’s perfection.”
He smiled despite himself.
She wasn’t trying to become someone worthy of being chosen.
She had already decided she was worthy.
There was something deeply unsettling...
And deeply comforting...
About someone who didn’t need his approval to know her own value.
The Universe watched him close the article.
Not because he was finished.
Because he needed time to think.
Real time.
Not the kind spent winning conversations.
The kind spent meeting himself.
The Universe stood, brushed invisible stardust from its sleeves, and looked toward the morning sky.
“Funny, isn’t it?”
“He thought he was reading about her.”
“But every page quietly handed him a mirror.”
“And now...”
“For the first time...”
“He isn’t wondering why she’s different.”
“He’s wondering why she makes him want to become different too.”
The Universe smiled.
“Now...”
“That...”
“...is where every truly interesting story begins.”
