The Universe sighed.
“Oh...”
“There it is.”
“I wondered how long it would take.”
The article had finally arrived.
Not in a dramatic way.
Not with lightning.
Not with angels singing.
No...
It appeared exactly the way most life-changing moments do.
As a simple piece of writing.
The Universe leaned forward.
“This is my favorite part.”
Across the room sat the asshole.
Confident.
Collected.
Professionally dressed.
The kind of man who had built an entire identity around remaining difficult to read.
Someone sent him the article.
His eyes landed on the title.
The Asshole and the Angel.
He stopped.
Just for a fraction of a second.
Barely noticeable.
Unless...
...you happened to know him.
The Universe chuckled.
“There it is.”
“That little side smirk.”
“He always does that.”
“He thinks it makes him look sarcastic.”
“It doesn’t.”
“It makes him look nervous.”
He clicked the article anyway.
Of course he did.
By the third sentence he was already shaking his head.
“...Unbelievable.”
By the sixth...
He leaned back in his chair.
By the tenth...
He wasn’t reading anymore.
He was remembering.
The Universe looked toward the coworkers.
“Oh, don’t mind them.”
“They’re pretending to work.”
“They’re absolutely watching him.”
One glanced across the room.
Another looked down to hide a grin.
Someone cleared their throat for absolutely no reason.
No one said a word.
No one had to.
Sometimes silence says,
“Well...”
...better than language ever could.
The asshole noticed.
Naturally.
So he did what he always did.
He straightened his posture.
Answered an email.
Opened another window.
Suddenly became incredibly interested in spreadsheets.
Anything...
Anything...
Except looking like the article had affected him.
The Universe laughed.
“Oh, sweetheart...”
“You’ve convinced everyone except yourself.”
He reached the sentence where the angel admitted she wasn’t afraid of loving him.
She was afraid of inconsistency.
His eyes stayed there.
Longer than any other paragraph.
He read it again.
Then again.
The room around him slowly disappeared.
For the first time in a long time...
He wasn’t defending himself.
He wasn’t constructing the perfect response.
He wasn’t reaching for another clever line.
He simply sat there.
Feeling something he had successfully outrun for years.
Regret.
Not because he had loved.
But because he had spent so much energy pretending he hadn’t.
The workday ended.
People went home.
The lights dimmed.
The conversations stopped.
The meetings were over.
The performance...
Finally ended.
The Universe followed him home.
Not because it needed to.
Because it already knew what happened next.
It always happened next.
He sat alone.
The article still open.
He told himself he was only reading one paragraph.
Then another.
Then another.
He laughed once.
Quietly.
At one of her ridiculous jokes.
“She’s impossible...”
Silence.
A few minutes later...
“You really know me that well?”
Silence again.
The kind that only exists when someone is no longer arguing with another person...
...but with themselves.
He leaned back.
Closed his eyes.
And against his own better judgment...
He imagined a life.
Not a fantasy.
A life.
Ordinary mornings.
Coffee cups.
Arguments over absolutely nothing.
Her laughing at him because she caught him pretending not to smile.
Him pretending to be annoyed.
Knowing full well she’d see through it anyway.
A home that felt strangely peaceful.
A future that looked less like winning...
...and more like belonging.
Her head tilt that in every life broke him…
he wondered how he remembers something like that about her.
But everytime she writes and he reads or he imagines her she does it…
he sees her in the kitchen being silly talking to herself.
He imagines her in his car just all over the place…rolling her eyes at him…
she isn’t fooled by his charm and he knows that she will smile at him after.
He opened his eyes.
Reality returned.
“So...”
He whispered to the empty room.
“What now?”
The Universe smiled.
“There it is.”
“Not certainty.”
“Not answers.”
“A question.”
“The first honest one he’s asked himself in a very long time.”
Meanwhile...
Miles away...
The angel had no idea he was reading it for the fourth time.
She wasn’t pacing.
She wasn’t waiting by a phone.
She wasn’t trying to decode hidden meanings.
She was simply living.
Not because she loved him any less.
But because she’d finally learned that loving someone should never require abandoning herself.
The Universe looked at them both.
One learning that vulnerability was not weakness.
The other learning that boundaries were not the absence of love.
The distance between them had never been measured in miles.
It had always been measured...
...in courage.
The Universe stood, brushed the popcorn from its lap, and smiled to itself.
“These two still think this story is about whether they find each other.”
“It isn’t.”
“It’s about whether they become the kind of people who can recognize love without asking it to prove itself.”
The stars remained quiet.
The night grew still.
And somewhere...
An asshole who had spent a lifetime believing he was impossible to read...
Was smiling at an article...
Trying very hard not to admit...
That for the first time...
He felt completely seen.
