Before the Great Forgetting: Part II....The Place Where Even Generals Weep

There are things no army ever sees.

No matter how many battles they stand beside her...

No matter how many victories they celebrate...

There is one place they have never followed her.

Not because they were forbidden.

But because she would never allow them to carry that weight.

When the battle ended...

When the celebrations quieted...

When every wounded soul had been tended...

When every fallen life had been honored...

She always disappeared.

Sometimes it happened after death.

Sometimes it happened between incarnations.

Sometimes it happened in moments no human clock could ever measure.

She always returned to the same place.

The darkest place in the universe.

Not a darkness born from fear.

Not a darkness born from evil.

A silence so complete that nothing asked anything of her.

No voices.

No armies.

No expectations.

Only stillness.

It was there that she finally allowed herself to become something she never permitted anywhere else.

Not the General.

Not the Queen.

Not the Seer.

Simply...

Herself.

She stood alone.

For a long time she said nothing.

Then, with a slow breath, her wings unfolded.

They stretched into the endless darkness, no audience to admire them, no stories to be written about them.

Only silence.

She fell to her knees.

Not because she was weak.

But because strength, carried long enough, eventually asks to be set down.

She wept.

She screamed into the silence.

Every betrayal.

Every goodbye.

Every child she could not save.

Every soul who had cursed her before one day understanding why she had never forced them to choose differently.

Every life she had loved...

Even when they had forgotten her.

She released them one by one.

Not because she wished to forget them.

But because she refused to carry bitterness into another lifetime.

When the silence finally returned...

She felt him.

She always felt him.

Sometimes he arrived before she noticed.

Sometimes she knew he had been standing there all along.

Sometimes he wore a face she recognized.

Sometimes he came through another form entirely.

Sometimes he simply existed beside her without shape or name.

It never mattered.

He always found her.

He never interrupted her grief.

He never rushed her healing.

He simply sat beside her.

As he always had.

For longer than either of them cared to measure.

Finally she laughed through tears.

“You always know where to find me Seraphiel.”

“I never had to find you,” he answered softly.

“You always come here.”

She lowered her head.

“I wish they understood.”

“I know.”

“I never wanted them to suffer.”

“I know.”

“I never wanted to fight them.”

“I know.”

“I wanted them to remember before pain became their teacher.”

He smiled.

“So did I.”

She looked out into the endless darkness.

“They think I enjoy this.”

“I know.”

“They think I choose war.”

“I know.”

“They think I don’t feel what happens to them.”

His eyes never left her.

“I know.”

She closed her eyes.

“I love them so much.”

The words escaped almost as a whisper.

“I know.”

“They think I see their failures.”

“I know.”

“But all I ever see...”

Her voice broke.

“...is who they could become.”

Silence settled between them again.

Not awkward.

Not empty.

The kind of silence shared only by those who have walked beside one another for longer than memory itself.

After a time she spoke again.

“Every lifetime they fight me before they recognize me.”

“Yes.”

“And every lifetime I forgive them before they ask.”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“I don’t know why I keep hoping this one will be different.”

He smiled back.

“Because hope is the one thing you have never surrendered.”

She laughed quietly.

“You always know what to say.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I simply remind you of what you already know.”

She rested her head against him for the first time since arriving.

Just for a moment.

“I love you Seraphiel. Thank you for every life you chose to come to me… to find me even when you yourself would be uncomfortable in those lives…I know I wasn’t supposed to love you like this not the way they scripted it this life for me…but my love you made it unbearably hard not to…”

No armies watched.

No legends were written.

No civilizations remembered.

Only two souls sharing a silence that had existed long before language.

Eventually she looked toward the worlds below.

“This lifetime feels different.”

“It is.”

“They’ll see me.”

“Yes.”

“They’ll see everything.”

“Yes.”

“They’ll love me.”

“Some will.”

“They’ll fear me.”

“Some will.”

“They’ll grieve.”

“They will.”

She smiled through another tear.

“And I’ll probably still worry whether they’re disappointed in me.”

He laughed.

“You could hold together galaxies...”

“...and still worry someone thinks you’re too much.”

She laughed with him.

Then the laughter faded.

“What if they pity me?”

He became quiet.

“They won’t.”

“What if they see me tired?”

“I hope they do.”

She looked at him, confused.

“Why?”

“Because perhaps then...”

he said gently,

“...they will finally understand that love has always been the greatest strength you carried.”

She looked once more toward the countless lives preparing for another dawn.

“I wish they could see themselves the way I see them.”

“They will.”

“You sound certain.”

“I am.”

“When?”

He smiled.

“When they finally realize...”

he whispered,

“...that all you have ever been trying to do was remind them who they were.”

She stood.

Folded her wings once more.

Dried the last of her tears.

The General returned.

Not because the woman had disappeared...

But because she had finally allowed herself to be seen, if only by the one soul who had never asked her to pretend she was unbreakable.

And somewhere beyond the silence...

A new lifetime began…
